Thumbnail image

Art Museum.

HISTORY OF ST. NICHOLAS RUSSIAN ORTHODOX CATHEDRAL IN SEATTLE

World War I was long over but the Russian Revolution was still burning in the people’s minds and hearts. The Great Depression was devastating world economies and most people were striving to create a new beginning. The people of the Russian Diaspora were seeking new homes whether temporary or permanent and here, in Seattle, a small group of uncompromising émigrés formed a coalition for the purpose of building what Russians always built upon settling a new region, a new church. This was the founding moment of what became the beacon of Russian Orthodoxy and culture for the next seventy-five years in the northwest corner of the contiguous United States.

The St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Greek Catholic Church, as it was then called, was founded in 1932 by Russian immigrants, many of whom were naval officers under the tsar, who fled the scourge of Bolshevism. With the blessing of his Eminence Archbishop Tikhon of San Francisco and Western American, they formed a Russian Orthodox community, bought land and built a church. The community was first served by visiting priests from San Francisco and Los Angeles and later by the first rector Very Reverend Archpriest Michael Nikolaevsky. After the untimely death of Fr. Michael another Fr. Michael was appointed as rector, the Very Reverend Archpriest Michael Danilchik. It was during the tenure of Fr. Michael Danilchik that the church was built.

The newly constructed church was consecrated by Archbishop Tikhon of Western America on December 19, 1937, dedicated to St. Nicholas the Wonderworker of Myra in Lycia and designated as a memorial to the martyred Tsar Nicholas II, his Royal Family and all the Russian soldiers and people who died defending their faith, tsar and country.

More Russian Orthodox faithful settled in Seattle after escaping the Japanese occupation in Manchuria in the 1930’s and the Soviet Union’s devastation during World War II. After the turmoil of World War II, the émigré community grew with refugees from both Europe and Asia. World War II "DP" (Displaced Persons) camps were full of Russians in Germany. After Communism spread to China in 1947, many Russians who had resettled in Shanghai, Harbin, and other Chinese cities, were forced again to flee economic and political hardships. Many were rescued from refugee camps on the island of Tubabao in the Philippines by the efforts of St. John of Shanghai and San Francisco. (St. John served at St. Nicholas Cathedral often and reposed here in 1966. The room where he reposed is now a small chapel dedicated to his memory ). (Visit OrthodoxPhotos.com to see photos of Archbishop John (Maximovitch) of Western America and San Francisco.)

From the 1990’s, following glasnost and the fall of the iron curtain, a new influx of émigrés has joined the parish and found and continues to find a new spiritual home here.

In the early 1960’s, Bishop Nektary was decreed the first Vicar Bishop of Seattle and the church now became designated as a cathedral. From 1992 Bishop Kyrill held this position until 2001 when Archbishop Kyrill became the Archbishop of San Francisco and the Western American Diocese. Our Cathedral has been blessed by the service of many wonderful priests, including Mitred Archpriest Andrew Nachonetchny and Protopresbyter Konstantin Tivetsky, Priest Serafim Gascoigne. Currently, the rector is Right Reverend Bishop Theodosy, Dean - Archpriest Alexei Kotar who also is the Dean of the Northwest parishes. We have had temporary interim priests; of note are Protopresbyter Elias Wen (after Fr. Michael Danilchik) and Archimandrite Anastassy (before Fr. Alexei). We have been visited by Russian Orthodox dignitaries such as Metropolitans Anastassy and Philaret, Bishop Savva of Edmonton, Archbishop Anthony of San Francisco and our recently deceased first hierarch - Metropolitan Laurus, among many others. The Cathedral has hosted several significant church wide events over its history including: the annual Russian Orthodox Choir Musician's Conference (twice in the past ten years), the semi-annual clergy conference of the Western American Diocese and co-hosted the newly established St. Herman’s West Youth Conference.

St. Nicholas is one of the oldest parishes of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia in the United States and we try to keep the spirit of our forebears, the founding fathers of our church, alive. Although they were a political emigration, the raison d’être of their work was clearly specified in the by-laws of the parish where they identified the purpose of the parish as:

Mutual help among the members united in the common faith in Jesus Christ in reaching a common Christian goal of Salvation through the medium of community prayers, rituals, and rules established by the Church. (Parish By-laws dated 1/24/35)

May their memory be eternal and through their prayers and the intercessions of St. Nicholas, St John of Shanghai and San Francisco, the Holy Royal Martyrs and Russian and of St Spiridon of Tremithous (whom we consider the patron saint of this city) may the Cathedral flourish as a beacon of Orthodoxy for many years to come.

he Russian Orthodox Church of Three Saints, the first Orthodox parish chartered in Garfield and in Bergen County, celebrated its 100th Anniversary in September of 1998. The church was founded in 1898 by Russian immigrants, mostly from the region of the Carpathian Mountains in the former Austro-Hungarian Empire. Today’s parishioners include: first, second, and third generation families of those immigrants; converts to the faith; and recent immigrants from Russia. Named in honor of 3 fourth-century church Hierarchs, the founding of the Three Saints Church is connected to the lives of three more recent saints: Saint TIKHON (Belavin), Saint ALEXANDER Hotovitzky and Saint ALEXIS Tovt.
A Patriarchal Parish of the Moscow Patriarchate, the parish today is under the pastoral care of Very Rev. George Konyev and the loving ways of Matushka Alexandra Hnatkow-Konyev. Also serving in our parish is Father Protodeacon Daniel Sudol. Parish properties, business affairs, and social events are managed by the elected Church Committee, Mark Wolchko, President. The history of the Three Saints Church is shaped by the events of the parish as well as by the issues of the history of the Russian Orthodox Church in the United States.
The Centennial history of the Three Saints Church is related in two parts. The first highlights parish life from 1898 to the present. The second summarizes the history of Orthodoxy and its influences on the parish.

By the grace of God and His all-holy Mother, a new holy monastery has opened in the spiritually thirsty new world for the common benefit of Orthodox Christians, with the blessing of His Grace Metropolitan Alexios of Atlanta, and of our spiritual father, the Very Reverend Elder Ephraim. The zeal and desire of the Greek inhabitants of Florida is also praiseworthy, since it is due to their fervent prayers and efforts that the Panagia deigned to bless them with the establishment of a monastery dedicated to her.

The Holy Monastery of the Annunciation was established in September of 1998. The nuns in it trace their spiritual heritage to the ancient monastery of the Honorable John Forerunner in Serres. This historic monastery was established in the thirteenth century and is one of the most frequently visited pilgrimages visited in northern Greece.

Visitation Hours
The Monastery of the Annunciation is open to all the pious pilgrims every day from 9:00 AM to 7:30 PM.
The small church of the monastery is dedicated to the Annunciation of Theotokos and is celebrated on March 25th every year. For the yearly celebration many monks and nuns from all the Greek Orthodox monasteries of North America, as well as a great crowd of pious laymen, congregate to glorify and venerate the grace-filled Protectress of the monastery and of the whole world.

The story goes back a thousand years to the time when the heresy against the holy icons, Iconoclasm, was raging all over the Christian world. The Byzantine Emperor Theophilos had ordered, all holy icons be removed from the churches and burned. The Orthodox people were protecting and hiding the holy icons. They put themselves at risk of exile and even death for those icons.

In the year 829 this Holy Icon of the Theotokos, which according to tradition was painted by the hand of St. Luke the Evangelist, was kept in a beautiful church in the renowned city of Proussa. Today the church still stands in the city named Brusa, which is in Turkey near Constantinople. Many miracles have taken place in this Church.

As soon as the decree of the Emperor reached the city of Proussa, a godly man, the son of an officer of the royal court, decided to disobey the Emperor's order. He took the Holy Icon and fled to the mainland of Greece, because the persecution was less violent there. The young man was on his way to the city of Callipolis, (today Gallipoli or Gelibolu.) On his way to the city he lost the Holy Icon. His sorrow was great. “Alas, to me the wretched one”, he wailed. “The Lady Theotokos left me because of my sins”. However, he wouldn't turn back. He could not endure living amongst the enemies of the icons. He continued his journey and settled in the city of New Patre, near the northwest end of Peloponnesus. Time went by, and then one day he heard news about some miraculous events, which happened in an area of Aitola, Greece.

This area was completely unknown and inaccessible at that time. The terrain was very rugged, with steep rocky mountains and deep chasms and abysses between them. Not even a small village was there, except for a couple of shelters for the shepherds. The area was not suitable to build villages. Even domesticated animals survived with difficulty. However, Christians sometimes would hide in these remote mountains trying to escape persecution by heretics or oppression by Emperors and Kings.

According to the news, a child of one of the above-mentioned shepherds was keeping watch over his father's flock. One night the child was sleeping opposite the place where the cemetery of the monastery is now located. Suddenly solemn and sweet chanting woke him. The chanting came from a cave that was behind him. Fearful, he looked around and saw a pillar of light coming out of the cave and reaching up to heaven. At first he thought that this could be a rainbow. By God's Providence it came to him that he would not die of fear or go out of his mind. He thought that this couldn't be a rainbow because it was straight and also it hadn't rained. In great fear he went and told his father what he had witnessed. His father thought it was the child's imagination. He told him not to be afraid of things that weren't real and not to be frightened by his own shadow. The child insisted that what he had heard and seen was real.

Therefore, the next night, the child took his Christian father to the same place he had seen the pillar of light, to verify and confirm the vision. There, he saw what the child had told him, but would not dare go and see what was in the cave. The next day he took with him some other people and returned again. All saw the vision. Afterwards they searched the area and found the Holy Icon in the cave, radiant and shinning. They then venerated the Icon, and being joyful on finding this treasure, they arranged the area in order to keep the Icon there as a blessing. Everyday they brought candles and incense. How the icon came there is known only to him who took Prophet Abbacum from Jerusalem to Babylon, where Prophet Daniel was, and then brought him back. This is the first great miracle of the Lady Theotokos, the finding of Her Holy Icon.

Soon, the young man who had lost the Icon, and was now living in New Patre, heard that an Icon of the Theotokos was discovered by the vision of a pillar of light. Not wasting time he took his servants and after two days arrived at the cave of the Icon. Upon seeing the Icon he knew it was the one he had lost. After kissing and venerating the Icon, he gave gifts to the shepherds and headed back to New Patre with The Holy Icon. The shepherds’ joy turned to sorrow because of this deprivation and they pleaded with the young man to leave the Holy Icon behind. He explained that the Icon belonged to him, and that he had given them rich gifts. He also told them that the area was unsuitable to build a church and accommodate pilgrims Having said this, he took the Icon and left. When he and his company were tired and needed to rest from their long journey they stopped in a certain place. They soon fell asleep and when they woke, they couldn't find the Icon. Thinking that the shepherds stole it while they slept, they turned back. Arriving at a narrow spot near the river, the young man heard a voice,

Oh young man, be saved, go in peace and do not toil any more. I am pleased to remain here in this rugged wilderness with the shepherds and peasants and not to be in the cities with people who preach heresies: and if you wish to stay with me come where you had found me. This will be good for you.

Only the young man heard the voice. Obedient to the divine calling, he freed his servants, abandoned all his possessions, and with one of his servants, who decided to stay with him, went back to the cave where he had found the Holy Icon. He was certain that the will of the Lady Theotokos was that she lives there. The young man built a chapel in the cave for the Holy Icon. He and his servants were both tonsured monks by the Priest monk Raphael who was from the nearby hermitage of St. Demetrios. He received the name Demetrios and his servant received the name Timothy. Afterward he built a cell opposite the chapel in a quiet place away from the noisy pilgrims. He peacefully reposed there having lived a life pleasing to God. His disciple Timothy in the church he had built buried his body, and his blessed soul flew to heaven. This was the beginning of the Monastery of the All-Holy Mother of God of Prousa (or Prousiotissa).

The Monastery has existed for one thousand years and still stands today. It has withstood the ravages of natural and manmade disasters. The main church, dedicated to the Dormition of the Theotokos, is in the cave. The ancient and incense-darkened Icon remains in the inner cave, surrounded by countless precious offerings. The offerings are truthful witnesses to innumerable miracles of times past and present. The village of Proussos has been built near the Monastery.

The Icon awaits the crowds of pilgrims who flock there from the 15th to the 22nd of August, which are the days of the feast. In olden times the quiet of the mountains was disturbed by the voices of groups of people going to the feast. They had to walk on goat paths, among ancient chestnut, fir and plane trees. The journey was 15 hours long and the people carried baskets of food and bundles of blankets balanced on their heads. Riding on horseback was reserved for the old and the infirm. Some of them could be seen walking barefoot or crawling on their knees, fulfilling a promise given for a miraculous healing. The pilgrims would go there, light their candles of faith and stay overnight in the monastery's guesthouse or out in the open. In the morning people would attend a very early church service and then depart hoping to return next year.

Today the monastery is accessible by car. The car inches patiently along the winding dirt road, which is carved on the steep mountain slope. The road from the south comes to an elevated area called Stavros, from there the monastery can be seen perched on a recess of a precipice at the northwest corner of a narrow valley surrounded by mountain peaks. The pilgrim's patience is rewarded with a great blessing, the veneration of the Icon of the All-Holy Mother of God of Prousa.

История
One thing have I desired of the Lord, which I will require : even that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the fair beauty of the Lord, and to visit his temple. (LXX Psalm 26 : 4)

The Monastery of the Glorious Ascension, founded in 1977, is situated on one hundred thirteen acres of wooded, rural land in northwest Georgia, on Highway 41, between Dalton and Calhoun, Georgia, just forty miles south of Chattanooga, Tennessee.  Its Brotherhood is committed to the traditional monastic life of liturgical worship, private prayer, and work. Striving to bear missionary witness to the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ in the Orthodox manner, the monks embrace the monastic principles and ideals as set for us by the Holy Fathers of the Church, which form our Orthodox Christian legacy.

In view of this ancient legacy, we recognize that an integral and most necessary part of one's own spiritual growth is the acute awareness of one's shortcomings (amartia) and regular confession. Each day, the monk or novice must set aside some of his time for spiritual nourishment through reading the Holy Scriptures, the writings of the Fathers of the Church, lives of the Saints, and other spiritually uplifting and rewarding writings. In order to deepen his spiritual life and further his goal of union with God, regular participation in the Mysteries, corporate worship, study, and various means of individual discipline (under the direction of the Elder and / or one's Spiritual Father) are indispensable.

A monk's life is not to be seen as an escape from reality and a settling into a life of static and mundane monotony. Rather, it is the response to a calling, a vocation that is a dynamic and spiritually challenging asceticism (askesis), whereby one is ever vigilant and, thus, is aware of digressions, as well as regressions. A monk is ever striving, in hope and love, to ..." run with patience the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith" (Hebrews 12:1-2). The monastic life is a life of prayer, intercession, love, and charity.

The Presentation of the Virgin Mary Orthodox Monastery is dedicated to the Glory of God and the honoring of His Blessed Mother.
Officially under the Omophorion of the Bishop of Chicago and the Midwest of the Orthodox Church in America, the monastery is the first women’s monastery of the diocese and pursues a traditional life of work and prayer.
After receiving its official Monastic Charter, the monastery followed the appropriate legal steps through which it was granted full tax exempt status as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization

It was our original intention to build the monastery in Ohio among the many Orthodox people whose heartfelt desire it was to have the monastery located there. However, over the course of eight years, we looked at many sites. Some seemed promising, but for various reasons they did not work out.
After trying so long to find a property in Ohio, an unexpected door opened, and we gradually came to understand that Our Lord was directing us to another location within the diocese where there were no monasteries.
Interest in the Orthodox Church is growing in the Springfield – Branson area of the country that is often referred to as the “heart of the Bible belt.”

Our diocese’s St. Thomas the Apostle parish is the first Orthodox Church in the city of Springfield, Missouri. With cradle Orthodox from virtually every Orthodox background and many converts, they outgrew their original church building during within five years.

One of their parishioners offered the extraordinary gift of land on which to build the monastery. Upon visiting the property, we realized that the site was ideal, providing a lake, natural wooded trails, ample room for future growth, and a location readily accessible for visitors.
Having prayed and thought at length about this generous offer, we discussed it with His Eminence Archbishop Job. Receiving his blessing to accept the land on the Feast of the Annunciation 2006, we immediately began our first fund-raising campaign.
The land on which we would build the monastery required extensive development. With donations, we were able to begin site preparation, adding a well and septic system and cutting a long driveway through the forest to the location where the house would be placed...

The Brotherhood of the All-Merciful Saviour was established in 1986 by Archimandrite Dimitry (Egoroff) of blessed memory. The Monastery is under the omophore of The Rt. Rev. Bishop Theodosy of Seattle, of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia. The Very Rev. Igumen Tryphon is the abbot of the monastery.

The Monastery is located on scenic Vashon Island in the central Puget Sound, near Seattle, Washington. About a twenty minute ferry ride from West Seattle and 15 minute ferry ride from Tacoma, Vashon is only accessible by boat. The Island is heavily forested, and, although it is in a major metropolitan region, it retains rural. About 85% of the island is undeveloped forest.

The Monastery is actually on Maury Island, connected by a thin body of land at Quartermaster Harbor, and collectively referred to as Vashon Island. Just south of the small village of Dockton, the Monastery is on a hill surrounded by a forest of large fir, hemlock and madrona trees

The monks came to the Island in 1988 and rented a small farm house near the current location for a number of years. Through the generosity of Islanders John and Georgia Ratzenberger, who gave them five acres of land, the monks were able to begin building a permanent presence on the Island. The monks were eventually able to acquire the neighboring eleven acres. The present sixteen acres is surrounded on two sides by a forty acre water shed.

Through God’s mercy and the generosity and hard work of Islanders and Orthodox Christians across the country, the monastic community has constructed a small chapel dedicated to St. John the Wonderworker of Shanghai and San Francisco, a katholikon (main temple) dedicated to the Holy Protection of the Theotokos, as well as seven monastic cells, the Metropolitan Laurus Memorial Library, and the Trapeza (dining hall and kitchen).

The brotherhood welcomes visitors but requests pilgrims call before taking the ferry. As a contemplative community, we try to preserve our solitude, while also welcoming visitors to share in the services and the beauty of the monastic grounds.

Donations toward the support of the monastery, are gratefully received. You may do so by using your credit card, or by mailing a contribution directly to the monastery.

To God be glory and honor and praise, unto the ages of ages. Amen.
